From the Bill Patterson archive - 2 updates

Alan Girling writes: "I can help with a couple of names on Bill Patterson’s cricket photo. Standing next to Bill is the scorer, Steve Taylor, later of basketball fame, and a classmate of mine all through school. Next to Steve looks like David Shepherd. In front of those two, second from the right is a guy called Simmons – forget his first name though he was also a good rugby player (fly half for 1st XV I think) (all these guys with the exception of Steve were years ahead of me). In the middle of the back row, next along from who might be David Shepherd looks like Geoff Evans. Geoff was a good footballer too (not a rugby player). In front of Geoff I think is a guy called Rogers – again forget the first name although his nickname was Budge after the then more famous rugby player. (Might be wrong here ‘cos I thought he was of earlier vintage). I agree the photo was 1964-ish judging from Steve Taylor’s appearance. I know most of the other faces and I’m sure if you get names to them I’ll be able to say ‘Oh yes, I remember him, he was around when the Kaiser was defeated…’

Don’t know if this helps fill some gaps - Cheers -- Alan
and Martin Jones writes
"Bit before I became involved with senior cricket, but a detailed study of my copies of 'The Bourne' (how sad can you get?!) indicates this was the 1st XI in 1963 rather than 1964. It certainly looks like Budge in the front row centre (all Upper 6th seemed amazingly tall to us 2nd years in those days!), and the familiar face of Dave Shepherd is in the back row, 3rd from right, with Geoff Evans on his left. A young Simmons featured well during the season, and I recall him having fair hair, so probably front row, 2nd from right. I can't place any others but Lawrence, Rasor, Fairman, Andrews, Blunden and Patience all featured, so perhaps someone could fill in the gaps, along with some more first names which were of course not known to us junior mortals! Taylor was apparently the 1st XI scorer so is presumably the chap in the tie next to WRP. And talking of Bill, he apparently hit a 'splendid 75' in a match which Staff took part in with the 1st XI against the Midland Bank.

Rear row- Vic Gilbert, ?,?. David Shepherd,? Bill Patterson
Front Row- ?,?, Paul Rasor, Peter Budge,?,?,?

Sports Concert query - continued

Martin Jones writes
"I suspect Nick Holloway will not need extra lessons. Although long after my time at the school, I was trying to put names in the programme to my involvement as a Leader with the Scouts in Coulsdon in the 1970s and 1980s. Andrew Southwell was certainly in my Scouts until about 1984 (his younger brother Graham was one of Aker's assistants at the reunion in 1988), and Richard Webber (Parents Association) was certainly the father of Simon and Craig who were in the Scouts and at Purley in the 1980s. I was going to go for 1984, 1985 or 1986, but am happy to agree with Nick, particularly as his knowledge of exact days of the week are obviously better than mine! Happy to have a go at producing a wooden spade or test-tube rack in Room 30 if we are wrong! Interesting to see the 5p (or 1/-) price tag on the programme. Clearly Purley was not yet into computer graphics at that time, but 5p...? Visions of Arthur Loveland slaving over a hot offset-litho machine!"

Sports Concert Query answered?

Nick Holloway writes: "I suspect that the programme which appears on the latest ed.
of the website is from 1986? Looking down the names of people who appeared in sketches I see "Jason Perry"; he was the school's last Head Boy, and I remember him announcing grace etc. when we all went to that reunion in July 1988, when the school was closing, to reopen the next
term as Purley 6th Form College. Since then he's gone onto become a Conservative councillor in Croydon, and I think is now a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate?
Of course the Concert might be from an earlier date, could have been a previous pupil with the same name, but it's def. post 1972, as Mr Jarman appears on the credits too, (he joined the staff that year) and I also know that March 20-22 1986 were Thursday-Saturday inc. and that the show was always held on those days of the week.

Shoot me down and send me to an extra lesson with AJP trying to teach British History without falling asleep and disappearing into the stock cupboard for another sherry (!) if
I'm wrong?!

(Maybe I should try and get out more?!!!)

All the best,
